How it works

Three steps, no learning curve

    Step 1

    Hold the shortcut

    In any app, put the cursor where you want the text and hold Ctrl + Win. For hands-free, press Ctrl + Win + Space.

  2. Step 2

    Talk like you talk

    Say it the way you would say it to a person. Pauses, "um" and quick corrections are fine.

  3. Sounds good, see you at 3.

    Clean text with punctuation lands at your cursor.

Why talk

You speak about three times faster than you type

In a study of 168,000 volunteers, people typed about 52 words a minute on average. In another study, people entered text by speech at about 153 words a minute. Koltype turns that difference into time back every week, without changing the apps you use.

Koltype Cloud

Each phrase is sent over an encrypted connection and turned into text. Our servers process it in memory and discard it, and never store your audio or your text. Our speech-recognition processor may keep request data for up to 30 days to detect abuse, unless zero retention applies (see the privacy policy).

  • Pro: 600 minutes (10 hours) a month. Free: a one-time 30-minute trial.
  • Needs an internet connection.
  • If it cannot be reached, your computer takes over.

    Transcripts, recordings, your dictionary and notes stay on your computer. Export or delete them any time.

  • Only your dictation is sent

    No audio leaves your PC until you start dictating. With Koltype Cloud, each phrase is then sent with your dictionary words and a little of what you said just before as hints, and pauses are cut out first.

  • Fully on your computer

Which apps does Koltype work in?

Any Windows app where you can type: email, Slack, Teams, WhatsApp Web, Word, Google Docs, Notion, your browser, code editors and terminals. Koltype types at the cursor, so there is nothing to install inside each app.

What is the difference between on your computer and Koltype Cloud?

On your computer: Koltype turns your speech into text on your own PC, so your voice never leaves it. It works without internet and is included in both plans (600 minutes a month on Free, unlimited on Pro). Speed and accuracy depend on your computer.

What does the Free plan include?

600 minutes of dictation a month on your computer, in every app, with the dictionary, snippets, styles and history. The minutes start again on the first day of each month. You also get a one-time 30-minute Koltype Cloud trial: start it in the app under Settings, Billing. No card needed.

What does Pro include?

600 Koltype Cloud minutes (10 hours) in every monthly period and unlimited dictation on your computer. After the included minutes, extra cloud minutes cost $0.02 each. They are off until you turn them on in your account page, where you also pick the monthly cap ($0, $5, $10, $20 or $50; $10 is suggested). Without them, Koltype keeps working on your computer at no extra cost. Pro is $9.90 a month; VAT or sales tax is added at checkout where it applies. The pricing page has a worked example.

Which languages does Koltype support?

The app is in 13 languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese (Brazil), Korean, Italian, Polish, Turkish, Hebrew, Arabic and Dutch. You can dictate in many more, including English, Hebrew, Spanish, French, German and Arabic. Pick up to three spoken languages in Settings; choosing exactly your languages improves accuracy.

Do you keep my recordings?

Not on our servers. Audio and transcripts are never stored there: with Koltype Cloud our servers process them in memory and discard them. Our speech-recognition processor may keep request data for up to 30 days to detect abuse, unless zero retention applies. Your history stays on your computer, where you can search it or delete it. Details are in the privacy policy.

How many computers can I use?

Up to 3 computers per account, sharing the same minutes. Signing in on a fourth computer signs out the one used least recently. You can sign a computer out any time on your account page.

What happens if my internet drops while I talk?

If Koltype Cloud cannot be reached, your computer transcribes the recording instead. With History on (the default), Koltype also saves every recording on your computer before it is transcribed, so you can retry it later.

What counts as a minute?

Koltype Cloud minutes are the length of the audio our server receives. Each phrase counts at least 1 second, and clips under half a second are not counted. Minutes on your computer are measured by the app. Pauses between phrases are cut out before anything is sent.

What do I need to run it?

Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit) and a microphone. Koltype does not run on Mac, iPhone or Android. Dictation on your computer needs a one-time download of about 1.6 GB; Koltype Cloud needs an internet connection.

Why does Windows warn me when I install it?

New apps from small publishers can show a SmartScreen notice until Windows has seen enough installs. Choose More info, then Run anyway. The download page shows exactly what you will see.

Does it work in apps that run as administrator?

Windows does not let normal apps type into windows that run as administrator. If you need that, start Koltype as administrator too.

Can I cancel or get a refund?

Cancel any time from your account page. Pro stays active until the end of the period you paid for. For a first purchase you can ask for a refund within 14 days. See the refund policy.
